Cavemen Beat S. Medford, Cavers lose to Panthers & More Tuesday Night BBall Action
The high school basketball playoffs are looming and the Grants Pass Cavemen took another step toward making the playoffs Tuesday night defeating the South Medford Panthers 62 to 54 moving into 3rd place in conference. It was the 4th win in a row for Grants Pass that followed a losing streak of 4 following the return of Peyton Bruner from an injury in December.

Bruner led the Cavemen with 25 points Tuesday night with teammate Jordan Rossetta adding 19. The top three teams in conference qualify for the playoffs plus the top 32 teams fill in the brackets. GP is 32nd. The Cavemen next host the league leading Sheldon Irish this Friday night in the final regular season home game. The Cavemen finish the season on the road with contests at North Medford and then Willamette. All will be broadcast on KAJO radio.

The 8th Lady Cavers did not fare as well losing by 30 to the 2nd ranked South Panthers 64 to 34. Both the Cavers and Panthers are expected to land in the playoffs.

Basketball Double Header Tuesday Night at Heater-Newman with Playoff Implications
Grants Pass Basketball fans are in for a treat Tuesday night with a 6A double header in Heater-Newman gym. The Lady Cavers lead the way, tipping off at 5:30 against the South Medford Panthers. The Cavers are 2nd in the Southwest Conference with at 6 and 2 record while the Panthers are 3rd sporting a 5 and 1 tally. It’s likely both teams will make the playoffs with both currently ranked in the top 10 statewide, but this game will help determine post season seedings.

Then at the 7:00 the Cavemen tip off against the Panthers boys’ team in a battle for 3rd place in conference, currently held by the Panthers with a 4 and 3 record.
The Cavemen are 4th with a 4 and 4 record so Tuesday’s winner will be in third place with three games to play. The top three conference teams qualify for the post season. The Cavemen game will be broadcast on live KAJO with the pregame set for 20 minutes prior to tipoff.

Other SWC action Tuesday night includes both boys and girls of Willamette playing at South Eugene with the Roseburg boys are at North Medford while the girls play in opposite venues.

GP Boys & Girls Outscore Roseburg, Face South Eugene Today
Grants Pass beat Roseburg 68 to 36 at Heater-Newman yesterday. Payton Bruner led the Cavemen with 27 points, and Jordan Rosetta added 17 points in the win. Grants Pass improves to 7 and 12 overall, and 3 and 4 in Southwest Conference play. Today the Cavemen travel north to face the South Eugene Axe who are fourth in conference, a half game ahead of GP. The game will be broadcast live on KAJO with the tip off at 6:45. The pregame will air about twenty minutes prior to tip off.

In other Southwest Conference Action Willamette is at Roseburg and South Medford is at Sheldon.

Other local schools in action for both boys and girls, includes Rogue River hosting Brookings-Harbor and Glendale at Yoncalla.

The Lady Cavers won at Roseburg 66 to 28. The number 8 Lady Cavers improved to 14 and 4 on the season. The Lady Cavers are hosting South Eugene with a tip off at 6:45 p.m.

Winter Storms Force Early Start for H.S. Basketball
The winter storms southern Oregon is experiencing has forced some adjustments to local sports schedules. The Grants Pass Cavemen will still play the Roseburg Indians today but the tipoff time has been moved to 4 p.m. this afternoon. Only the varsity game will be played and it will be broadcast live on KAJO with the abbreviated pregame airing at approximately 3:45 p.m. Friday’s game at South Eugene is still scheduled to occur.

The Lady Cavers are traveling to Roseburg, again only the varsity, for a 4 p.m. start there to facilitate safe travels for both teams.

Cavers & Cavemen Host Willamette Plus Fridays Matches & Thursday Results
Local basketball fans get a treat tonight at Heater-Newman gym with a 6A double header when Grants Pass High welcomes the Willamette Wolverines to town. The first game gets underway at 5:30 with the 8th ranked Lady Cavers taking on the 5th ranked Lady Wolverines. The Cavers trail the Wolverines by a half game for first place in the Southwest Conference.

Then at seven the Cavemen take on the Wolverines boys team. They are tied for 4th in conference with 1 and 4 records. The Cavemen’s overall record is 5 and 12 compared to Willamette’s 4 and 13. Each team will be trying to end a four game losing streak.

In other SWC action North Medford’s boys and girls are at Sheldon while the Roseburg girls are at South Eugene, the Axe boys are at Roseburg.

Other action tonight has both the boys and girls of Hidden Valley playing at Mazama, North Valley at St. Mary’s and Lakeview at Rogue River.

Tornado Beats Cavemen, Cavers dump N. Medford & Other Local Scores
The Cavemen dropped their 4th game in a row last night to the Black Tornado 47 to 41. Grants Pass was led by Jordan Rossetta with 12 points, both Payton Bruner and Zach DeChenne added 11 points. The Cavemen will host Willamette this Friday night at 7pm.
Elsewshere in the Southwest Conference Sheldon strengthened its hold on first place with a 61 to 49 win over South Eugene while South Medford picked up a road win over Roseburg 67 to 51.

In other local action the Phoenix Pirates handed Hidden Valley an 11 point loss in Murphy 60 to 49. The North Valley Knights won on the road beating Brookings-Harbor 65 to 36.

The number 7 ranked Lady Cavers beat North Medford 50 to 41 yesterday. Grants Pass is now 13 and 3 on the season. The Lady Cavers host Willamette on Friday at 5:30pm. In other SWC ladies action Sheldon more than doubled South Eugene winning 56 to 27 while South Medford flexed their scoring muscles handing Roseburg an 83 to 31 loss.

Cavemen Host Black Tornado Tuesday & Other Local Contests
The Grants Pass Cavemen return to Heater-Newman gym Tuesday night to host the 2nd place team in the Southwest Conference, the 3 and 1 North Medford Black Tornado. The 1 and 3 Cavemen are looking to turn their conference season around with the possible return of Senior Peyton Bruner, who was their leading scorer prior to breaking his shooting hand in the last game of their post-Christmas tournament in Southern California. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. or 20 minutes after the Lady Cavers host the Tornado.

The Lady Cavers are third in conference and ranked 8th in the state, while the Tornado are a game back in conference at 2 and 2 but are ranked 32nd statewide. The Caver/Tornado tips at 5:30.

Other SWC action has Sheldon at Eugene and South Medford at Roseburg. Other local team playing include Phoenix at Hidden Valley, North Valley at Brookings-Harbor, St. Mary’s at Rogue River and Illinois Valley at Reedsport.

Indians Edged Cavemen, Cavers Overwhelm Lady Indians
The Cavemen lost a close battle with the Indians in Roseburg Tuesday night 48 to 46 in a game that saw the lead change multiple times throughout the contest including several times in the 4th quarter. Grants Pass was outscored at the foul line 9 to 3.

There was six seconds left with Jordan Rossetta was fouled and went to the foul line and missed the first shot. After a timeout to determine strategy, Rossetta intentionally hit the front of the rim with the ball to battle for the rebound, which eventually went out of bounds on the sideline. The Cavemen put the ball back into play and missed a final shot. Rossetta was the leading scorer with 22 points, 18 in the second half. Tim Hart had 12 points with four 3-point field goals. The Cavemen will host the North Medford Black Tornado next Tuesday.

In other local action last night the Tornado beat the South Medford, on the Panthers court 62 to 60. Sheldon continues to lead the Southwest Conference with a 59 to 44 win over Willamette. Hidden Valley outscored Mazama 55 to 37, North Valley edged Coquille by three, 59 to 56. The Illinois Valley Cougars won big, by 40 points over Oakland 79 to 39.
