RR-Siskiyou Forest Supervisor Lifts Temporary Closure on Butte Fork Trail
In response to public feedback regarding wilderness accessibility, Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Supervisor Molly Juillerat has lifted a closure order for a section of the Butte Fork Trail in the Red Buttes Wilderness.
In reviewing the closure order that went into effect on November 9th, Juillerat has determined the trail is safe for users and only the bridge needs to be closed.
Juillerat said the trail is important for those who recreate in this area, especially equestrians, and that there is not a passable bridge and no easy way to cross the river as there is a cliff in that location. However, the trail can still be used as an out-and-back.
The Butte Fork Bridge Closure that runs through October 2025 was implemented due to catastrophic failure associated with decayed substructures. The bridge is no longer viable and -- in true wilderness form -- it is up to the individual to find safe passage.
