Josephine County Payroll Employment Fell by 560 Jobs in July, But Increased Over Past Year

Total payroll employment in Josephine County fell by an estimated 560 jobs in July, but it increased over the past year. According to the Oregon Employment Department, there were 34,151 people working in Josephine County last month for a seasonally adjusted jobless rate of 4.7%, which was down from 4.9% in June and down from 5.6% in July 2022. Leisure & hospitality had the largest monthly gain, increasing by 60 jobs. Private education & health services and professional & business services also added jobs over the month. A loss in local government education is seasonally typical for July. Over the past year, payroll employment in Josephine County rose by 160 jobs, a gain of 0.6%. Industries adding jobs since July 2022 included private education & health services (+460), other services (+90), transportation, warehousing & utilities (+40), professional & business services (+30) and construction (+20). Industries losing jobs over the year were leisure & hospitality (-230), retail trade (-140), manufacturing (-80), wholesale trade (-60) and financial activities (-50).

Two People Hospitalized with Gunshot Wounds after Incident at M Street Market
The Grants Pass Police Department is reporting two people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a shooting incident that occurred near a southeast city market early today. At 8:52 this morning, police officers responded to a reported shooting near the M Street Market where they located a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound. Officers quickly located the suspect, who was armed with a gun. The incident escalated and culminated in an officer-involved shooting. Both the victim and the suspect were transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds and they were last reported to be in serious but stable condition. Neither patient was identified. Grants Pass Police Lieutenant Jeff Hattersley said none of the responding officers were injured and there is no further danger to the community from this incident. Hattersley said SE M Street from N Street to Green Briar Lane will be closed until the conclusion of the investigation. Citizens are asked to avoid the area. Because the shooting involved Grants Pass police officers, the investigation is being handled by the Oregon State Police.

Sheriff's Deputies Collared North Valley Man on Statewide & Local Warrants
The Josephine County Sheriff's Office jailed a North Valley man on statewide and local warrants yesterday. The Sheriff's Office reports deputies arrested 40-year-old Jason Andrew Williams at a home in the 200-block of Williamson Loop on Wednesday at 11:11 a.m.. Deputies said they were contacted by Josephine County Community Corrections regarding Williams' status as a state and local fugitive. Williams was wanted on an Oregon State warrant for Felony Parole Violation stemming from a past conviction for 2nd-Degree Rape along with a Josephine County warrant for failing to appear in court for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Hit-and-Run Causing Property Damage and 2nd-Degree Criminal Mischief. Jason Williams was placed into custody, transported to Grants Pass and lodged at the Josephine County Jail on the outstanding warrants. He was being held on a no-bail detainer.

GP Police Jailed Man on Felony Warrants after Neighborhood Complaints
Grants Pass Police jailed a man on two local felony warrants early yesterday after investigating reports of suspicious behavior in the northwest part of the city. The Police Department reports officers arrested 33-year-old Cody Wayne Nolen near the corner of NE Sun View Place and Crescent Drive on Wednesday at 10:12 a.m.. Police said they contacted Nolen and an unidentified female subject after getting complaints from neighbors who observed the pair removing the license plates off a Chevrolet Suburban. They said the callers reported the pair had been taking items out of the vehicle and carrying them into the woods over the past few days. Upon arrival, officers contacted Nolen and confirmed that the vehicle had not been reported stolen. However, they did discover that he was wanted on two Grants Pass felony warrants for two counts of failing to appear in court for 1st-Degree Theft. Cody Nolen was lodged at the Josephine County Jail and his corrections officer was notified. His female companion was detained, but not arrested.

Deputies Snared Felon for Parole Violation after Getting Bad Behavior Calls
The Josephine County Sheriff's Office arrested a felon for violating his post-prison supervision after responding to reports of unruly behavior at a local mobile home park. The Sheriff's Office reports deputies were alerted to a male subject jumping up and down and screaming at Country Estates Mobile Home Park on Beechwood Drive shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Deputies said several residents of the park called 9-1-1 regarding the antics of 34-year-old William Allen Tweet. Callers reported the suspect was walking through their yards without permission and they believed he was connected to a suspected drug house in the area. Upon arrival, deputies contacted Tweet while he was walking in the 4,000-block of Lower River Road. They placed him into custody without incident. William Tweet was lodged at the Josephine County Jail for Disorderly Conduct and the resulting Parole Violation stemming from convictions for Felony Attempt to Elude Police and Reckless Driving. He was being held on a no-bail detainer.

GP Police Arrested 1, Cited 4 and Trespassed 2 in Westholm Park Patrol
Grants Pass Police arrested a man for ordinance violations and more after he broke the rules several times at a city park early yesterday. According to the Police Department, officers contacted 47-year-old Luke Adam Boger at Westholm Park on Wednesday around 8 a.m.. Police said Boger was the subject of a citizen call about a male subject who had spread items around the basketball court while smoking a cigarette. He was lodged in jail for Disorderly Conduct, Offensive Littering and Criminal Trespass. He was also cited to appear in court for Debris in a Public Space and Smoking in a Park before being trespassed from Westholm for 30 days. Also at Westholm Park, Eric Froedge and Hope Chavarria were cited for Misuse of Park Open Spaces while Teresa Batts from cited for Scattering Rubbish and Public Urination. Batts was trespassed from the park for 30 days.

GP Police had Busy Day Citing Multiple Campers for Violating Ordinances
Grants Pass Police had a busy morning yesterday arresting and citing campers for violating city ordinances during park patrol checks. At 8:30 a.m. at Tussing Park, officers cited Alicia Coltrane for Scattering Rubbish. At 8:46 a.m. at Morrison Centennial Park, officers cited Bobbie Jo Langdon for Possession of a Schedule 2 Controlled Substance and trespassed her for 30 days. At 9:25 a.m. at Riverside Park, officers cited Robert Douglas, Shayna Mueller, Charles Williams, Gregory Kime, Carol Selph, Kristopher Bural, Russell Thompson and John Hanson for Buffer Zone violations after their tents were set up along the riverbank. Mueller, Kime and Selph were also cited for Scattering Rubbish, and all eight subjects were trespassed from the park for 30 days. Also at Riverside Park, Shon Asbury was arrested and lodged in jail after his tent was surrounded by trash, he become uncooperative and refused to clean up his mess. He was trespassed from the park for 30 days as was Charles Gonzolez who was cited for drug possession after he was spotted with a loaded syringe. At 10:04 a.m. at Debo Park, officers arrested Daren Norrington after his probation officer found him with a sawed-off pellet rifle and a custom-made edged weapon made out of two kitchen knives taped together at the handle. He was lodged in jail on a probation detainer for possessing weapons.

GP Police Nabbed Motorist for DUII after Traffic Complaint on Bridge Street
Grants Pass Police arrested a motorist for impaired driving after receiving a citizen complaint on the west side of the city last night. The Police Department reports officers responded to the traffic complaint in the 1900-block of SW Bridge Street on Wednesday at about 9:35 p.m.. Police said 52-year-old Stacie Ranee Montgomery was driving a large sport utility vehicle that was unable to maintain a single travel lane, cut off another motorist and hit the curb. Upon contact with officers, she reportedly displayed strong signs of impairment, performed poorly in field sobriety tests, and provided positive breath and urine samples. Montgomery was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Driving While Suspended. She was cited to appear in court and then released to her daughter.

JMET Jailed Suspect after Raiding 2 Illegal Cannabis Grows in the Illinois Valley

The Josephine Marijuana Enforcement Team (JMET) arrested one man this week while raiding two Illinois Valley properties containing illegal cannabis growing operations. JMET -- with assistance from the Oregon State Police and Josephine County Public Health & Building Safety -- served search warrants in the 5,000-block of West Side Road near Cave Junction and the 100-block of Cobalt Drive in O'Brien on Tuesday. During execution of the warrants, more than 2,200 marijuana plants and around 400 pounds of processed marijuana were seized and destroyed. Both grow sites also had multiple water and solid waste code violations that could result in the criminal forfeiture of the properties. According to JMET, 47-year-old Ivaylo Gavanozov was arrested at West Side Road and lodged in the Josephine County Jail for Unlawful Manufacture and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana as well as Unlawful Appropriation of Water. No suspects were located at the Cobalt Drive property -- but when the responsible party is located, they will be charged with the same crimes. Detectives said the investigation is ongoing and no further details on the cases are being released at this time.

OSP Snared Douglas County Sex Offender during Draper Valley Stop in Selma
The Oregon State Police arrested a Douglas County sex offender for being out of compliance with registry requirements this week during a traffic stop in Selma. According to OSP, troopers pulled over a Ford Explorer driven by 41-year-old Edmond Frank Fabianek of Roseburg near milepost 1 of Draper Valley Road on Monday night. Troopers said they stopped Fabianek for traffic violations and discovered that he was out of compliance with his mandatory sex offender registry. He was placed into custody, transported to Grants Pass and lodged at the Josephine County Jail. Fabianek's vehicle was towed to Cave Junction as an incident related to his arrest.

Police Arrested Man for Harassing Vice Principal at Grants Pass High School
Grants Pass Police arrested a man for harassing a vice principal at Grants Pass High School this week. According to the Police Department, officers responded to the incident involving 23-year-old Reed Thomas Beaumont at the high school on NE 9th Street around midday Tuesday. Police said Beaumont walked onto school property without permission, contacted GPHS Vice Principal Hector Santiago and asked who he was. They said the man then advised that he was the original caveman and he "runs" the school. He then grabbed Santiago's lanyard, pulled him down and said he wasn't a true caveman. The vice principal was able to break free and Beaumont threw the lanyard at him before fleeing on foot. He was tracked down and contacted by officers near SE M and Mill streets a short time later before being placed into custody. Reed Beaumont was lodged at the Josephine County Jail for Harassment. A dog that was with him was picked up by a family member.

ODF and BLM Report Nearly All Lightning-Caused Fires are Fully Extinguished
Following thunderstorms that brought close to 300 lightning strikes into southwest Oregon last weekend, firefighters have extinguished 13 fires. According to a joint news release from the Oregon Department of Forestry and Medford District BLM, the fires ranged in size from 1/100th of an acre to nine acres in Jackson and Josephine counties. Two fires were still being mopped up. The largest of those is the Heppsie Mountain Fire located south of Highway 140 and east of Lake Creek. As of Wednesday, the blaze was 95% mopped up and crews will remain on the fire to complete this work and thoroughly check the area. The other fire that resources are still dedicated to is the Palmer Creek Fire located around 3.5 miles northwest of McKee Bridge in the Upper Applegate. Crews have held the fire to four acres and have mopped up 50 feet into the interior of the blaze. ODF remains engaged in searching for any potential holdover fires from lightning strikes with its camera detection system, foot patrols and reconnaissance flights. With temperatures expected to heat up by the end of the week, new fires from these storms may begin to burn. All resources will remain ready to respond.
