GP Family YMCA Receives Foundation Funding for Sensory Friendly Fitness Classes

The Grants Pass Family YMCA recently received $5,000 from the Four Way Community Foundation's Rose Douglas Fund to bring Sensory Friendly Fitness Classes to the Y for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Rose Douglas Fund was established by Rose Douglas herself, a local educator with a son who had an intellectual disability. During his lifetime, there were only a few programs to assist him and they were very important to the Douglas family.

Recognizing the importance and need for enrichment opportunities, Rose Douglas left a significant endowment bequest through the local foundation to support the programs that assisted her son as well as to develop and enhance services to improve safety, health, education, recreation and overall life enjoyment.

The Grants Pass Family YMCA's Sensory Friendly Fitness Classes will be developed to serve adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The fitness class will be a benefit for individuals with a YMCA membership and non-members will need to pay an admittance fee. Fitness class participants will need to attend the class with a parent or caregiver.

The Y is excited to bring this much-needed opportunity to the community and more information about the specialized fitness class will be coming soon. Pre-registration will be required to participate. To stay up-to-date on program offerings, follow the Grants Pass Family YMCA on social media.
