OSP Releases More Details about Thursday's Fatal Crash on Redwood Highway

The Oregon State Police has released more information about last week's fatal crash on Redwood Highway in the Jerome Prairie area.

On Thursday at about 11:45 a.m., state troopers and emergency personnel were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash near milepost 5.5 of US Highway 199.

Troopers said a preliminary investigation indicated a Ford Fusion driven by 29-year-old Courtney Parsons of Rogue River was traveling southbound in the fast lane when a GMC Sierra driven by 87-year-old Ervin Besler of Grants Pass failed to properly clear traffic while turning left from Robinson Road onto the highway. The Fusion impacted the driver-side of the GMC in a T-bone collision.

According to OSP, Besler was declared deceased at the scene. Parsons and two passengers in the Ford -- 25-year-old John McCollum of Myrtle Point and 19-year-old Matthew Balise of West Springfield, Massachusetts -- were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Redwood Highway was impacted for approximately 3-1/2 hours while the on-scene investigation was conducted.

OSP was assisted by Rural Metro Fire Department, American Medical Response and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
