GP boys Win, Lady Cavers Lose to Willamette
A balanced scoring attack coupled with a stingy defense earned Grants Pass a 57 to 31 victory over conference foe Willamette in the Heater-Newman gym Thursday night. Payton Bruner led Grants Pass scoring with 11. GP improved their record to 8 and 6 overall and 2 and 0 in Conference play tying them for the SWC lead with South Medford, who edged Sheldon Thursday night 58 to 57. One other boy’s game last night had South Eugene beating the Black Tornado in Medford 79 to 65.

The Lady Cavers lost tight one to Willamette, 50 to 47. Grants Pass is now 1 and 1 in league play, and 8 and 6 overall. Last night’s game propelled Willamette into the #2 ranking by the OSAA while GP dropped to 14th.

GP Boys & Girls Post Conference Wins, Valley Schools Results
The Grants Pass Cavemen opened Southwest Conference basketball competition last night at Heater-Newman Gym and handed the North Medford BlackTornado a 63 to 43 loss. The game was close with multiple lead changes in the 1st quarter before GP turned up their defense to lead by seven at the half. Then the Cavemen dominated the 3rd quarter scoring and eased to the 20 point win.

Luke Morgan lead a balanced scoring attack with 17 points while Payton Bruner added 13, Tyler McIntosh 11 and Gavin McLean contributed 10. The win pushes Grants Pass’s record to 7 and 6 overall. The Cavemen will host the Willamette Wolverines boys and girls Thursday in a game that was rescheduled from Friday due to inclement weather forecasts. The boy’s game tips at seven and will be broadcast live on KAJO.

The Lady Cavers started league play with a 43 to 29 win at North Medford. Grants Pass is now 8 and 5 overall, and are currently ranked #12 in the OSAA rankings. The Lady Cavers will also host Willamette Thursday with their game slated to tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Cavemen Drop 2nd Game at Surf and Slam
The Grants Pass Cavemen have faced some tough competition in the Surf and Slam basketball tournament in San Diego. The Cavemen lost their second game in a row this morning 43 to 37 to Ogden, Utah. Gavin McLean was the leading scorer for Grants Pass with 13 points in a tournament where the boys in blue have had a tough time scoring.

They lost their opening game to Christian High School 57 to 38 Wednesday when the leading scorer was Tyler McIntosh with ten.

GPHS Boys & Girls Each Post Home Basketball Wins
Grants Pass evened up their record at 4 and 4, after a home win against Springfield last night, 57 to 49. Luke Morgan led the way for the Cavemen with 21 points while Gavin McLean added 19. Grants Pass will host Benson out of Portland next Friday the 22nd. The Lady Cavers moved to 3 and 1 with a 46 to 36 win over Springfield in Grants Pass last night. The Cavers travel to West Linn tonight.

Hidden Valley lost their opening game of the Les Schwab South Coast Tournament 69 to 62 to Philomath. The Mustangs are now 3 and 4. The Lady Mustangs also lost in the South Coast Tournament 50 to 23 to Coquille.

Knights Win, Cavemen & Mustangs Lose in HS Basetball
The short-handed Grants Pass Cavemen traveled north to Salem last night for their fifth consecutive road game and lost to the Sprague Olympians 65 to 47.

Luke Morgan led the Caveman scoring with 13 points, while Grady McKitrick added 12 including two three-point shots and Jayden Jesse added 10. The Cavemen return to the friendly confines of Heater-Newman gym this Thursday night when they host the Springfield Millers. That game will be carried live on KAJO with the pregame at 6:30 for a 7:00 o’clock tip off.

In other Southwest Conference action last night Sheldon lost to Summit by 3, 49 to 46, Crater edged Roseburg 55 to 54 and Willamette was dominated by North Eugene 70 to 47.

Locally the Hidden Valley Mustangs lost to Junction City 74 to 62. The Mustangs have now dropped 2 in a row after a 3 and 1 start to fall to 3 and 3.

High school basketball Season Tips-Off Tonight for Many Local Schools
The Hidden Valley Mustangs go on the road for their first game when they travel to Douglas for a boys tip off tonight at 7 p.m., the Lady Mustangs play the early game at 5:30.

The Illinois Valley Cougars are in Rogue River tonight to face the Chieftains. The boys tip off at 6 and the girls at 7:30

Duck Football & Cavemen Basketball Both Broadcast on G.P. Broadcasting Stations
Ducks football and Caveman basketball both will air on Grants Pass Broadcasting stations this Friday. The Pac-12 football championship will air on KAJO Friday night with the kick off at slated for five p.m. KAJO, 1270 A.M. will join the Ducks pregame show at four p.m. The Cavemen’s basketball team is also opening on Friday night when they host the Lincoln Cardinal at Heater-Neuman Gym at 7:00. That game will be broadcast on KLDR 98.3 F.M. with the pregame airing at 6:30. Saturday afternoon the Cavemen return to KAJO when they host the Sherwood Bowmen at three with the pregame slated tentatively at2:30 p.m.

High School Football Playoffs
In local football action the South Medford Panthers shutout North Salem at Spiegelberg Stadium 35 to 0 to advance to the semifinals of the Columbia Cup. Number one ranked Banks ended the North Valley Knights football season 35 to 6.

There are two games of local interest today with 7th ranked Vale traveling to the Rogue Valley to face second ranked Cascade Christian at Crater High School, and 9th ranked Illinois Valley Cougars travel to face number one Weston-McKwen/Griswold. Both games kick off at one o’clock.
