Police Officer Attacked; Perpetrator Jailed

A Grants Pass Police Officer was attacked last night after attempting to detain a suspect in the Terry Lane Arby’s.

Officers initially responded to a call from Wal-Mart shortly after 6:00 p.m. reporting a man throwing beer inside the store near the general merchandise entrance. The suspect also pushed a Wal-Mart employee while leaving the store.

Employees provided officers a description and told police they had last seen the suspect entering Arby’s.

54-year old Christopher Anthony, a transient, was quickly identified in the restaurant and instructed not to leave while they were conducting an investigation. Anthony then tried to leave and when grabbed by the shoulder struck the officer in the face with his fist.

Anthony continued the attack, scratching the policeman and attempting to gouge his eyes, until the second officer used a taser to stop the onslaught.

Anthony is lodged in jail facing a myriad of charges including criminal mischief two, resisting arrest and assault on a public safety officer.

The officer was treated at the scene for scratches on his face and right eyelid plus a swollen and sore jaw.
