Council Recognizes Hero; Hears Fleet Audit Report

The Grants Pass City Council recognized Daron Dawson with a standing ovation following the presentation of the Public Safety Honor Citation to him for saving the life of an 84-year-old woman from fire on August 24th.

Following the presentation the Council workshop went into report from Fleet Counselor Services President, Jim Wright, on the audit of the city fleet of vehicles. Wright was generally positive about the operation, “I’m not saying this to make you feel good. Your fleet department employees are doing a good job; some of the best we’ve seen. They care about their job, they care about working, they care about their vehicles and equipment.”

Wright did point out that of the 198 vehicles in the fleet, 24 are due, or are past due to be replaced, and that 47 are under utilized. He did not express concern about the under utilization because most of those vehicles were specialty rigs, such as a fire engine.

He did recommend better data collection using a part time clerk to document time as opposed to highly trained mechanics jotting down their every move; and the addition of a maintenance building where equipment may be maintained in a controlled environment. He used the fire department’s new aerial truck as an example of equipment with control systems that should not be worked on outside in inclement weather.
