Driver falls asleep at wheel and demolishes three vehicles

A driver who fell asleep at the wheel careened into two parked vehicles at 1235 N.E. 6th Street today at 10:01 a.m. and caused substantial damage to all three vehicles.

The driver, 25-year-old David Michael Gercis, said he shut his eyes for a second and when he awoke he struck a Ford Escape and a Toyota Sierra, both in the right-rear side, before his left-front tire came off and his Ford F150 slid to a stop near the sidewalk.

Gercis told police he has been caring for a newborn and had been losing sleep. He passed field sobriety tests and was cited for reckless driving and no driver’s license.

The other vehicles were unoccupied at the time of the crash and no injuries were reported.

The crash closed the left lane of 6th Street just past the intersection of Savage Street for approximately an hour.
