Public Health holds press conference regarding animal neglect case

Josephine County Public Health Administrator Diane Hoover held a press conference today to address the huge influx of former pets the Josephine County Animal Shelter received after over 200 animals were taken from a dilapidated property in the 1700 block of White School House Road in the Illinois Valley.

Over 50 volunteers with Search and Rescue, the Sheriff’s Posse and the Animal Shelter spent three days beginning Friday, Sept. 14, removing malnourished, sickly and sometimes deceased animals from the property of Kandi Lucile Crow.

No charges have been filed against Crow and Sheriff Gil Gilbertson says his office is still investigating the case. “There is a lot of things that need to be determined yet. The final decision on what the charges are going to be hasn’t been reached. The investigation is still ongoing,” Gilbertson said.

The animals that were rescued from the property are considered evidence and they will not be available for adoption until a criminal case has been prosecuted. The animals, including approximately 177 miniature horses, are being taken care in confidential locations to prevent any possibility of evidence tampering.

Veterinarian Dr. Gary Buckmaster, who is caring for the animals partially out of charity, says several of the animals will need to be put down.

Anyone who wants to donate to the care of the animals can contact Administrator Diane Hoover at Public Health by calling 541-474-5325.
