Masked suspects beat man with maglites

Grants Pass Public Safety officers are looking for multiple suspects that beat a man near the intersection C and N.W. Dimmick streets at approximately 8:54 p.m. Thursday.

The men, who were wearing dark clothing and Halloween monster masks, attacked the victim, 18-year-old Jacob R. Coates, with maglites and kicked him on the ground. Officers arrived within three minutes of receiving the emergency call but the suspects had all fled on foot, bicycle or skateboard.

Medical personnel transported Coates to Three Rivers Medical Center for treatment of multiple lacerations to his head that required staples and sutures. A hospital spokesman says Coates was treated and released.

Of the six or seven suspects only one was not wearing a Halloween mask and he is described as a white male with short-dark hair in his late teens or early twenties.

Coates had another recent run-in with law enforcement on Bridge Street on Sept. 13. He and two other suspects, Jason Vasquez and Levi Farnsworth, were arrested on firearms, drug and resisting arrest charges. Vasquez remains jailed.

Anyone with information about this case should contact the Department of Public Safety by calling 541-450-6260.
