Medford City Council Divided but Concerned About Proposed Casino

The Medford City Council is going to send a letter to federal officials expressing concern over the recent Coquille Indian tribe’s proposal to build a casino in the city.

Council woman Karen Blair urged the council to immediately oppose the casino to establish firm legal standing with federal agencies.

Other council members preferred to express concerns after staff members analyze the impacts on Medford.

The tribe recently purchased Kim’s Restaurant and Roxy Ann Lanes and is attempting to place the property into a government trust that begins the process that could lead to reservation status.

The Coquille tribe operates the Mill Casino in North Bend .

The Cow Creek Umpqua tribe that runs Seven Feathers Casino has vowed to block the competing casino.
