Medford Motorist May Encounter Different Parking Angles

Medford motorists shopping downtown may soon have to back their cars into diagonal parking spaces if the concept from that city’s parking commission is adopted by the city council.

The idea is to swap parallel parking spots on the north side of Main Street for diagonal from Riverside to Oakdale Avenues, removing one of the three travel lanes and installing a bicycle lane. The south side of the street would continue to have parallel parking.

The move would add three to eight more parking spaces and reducing the road to two lanes of travel would calm traffic, particularly for pedestrians but does increase the potential for causing congestion at Main and Central.

Proponents say the concept has worked well in Portland and Seattle.
