Medford Schools New Insurance Offsets Non-Union Raises

Administrators say the cost of a plan to raise compensation for nonunion employees of the Medford School District will be largely offset by a dramatic change in the group’s insurance plan and an end to early retirement benefits.

The district’s chief financial officer told the school board the increased compensation will cost the district nearly $200,000 this year but the new insurance plan with the end to early retirement benefits will save the district millions over the years.

The board must approve the budget amendment for the raises to go into effect but members said Monday night they were not ready to do that.

The change will have administrators, confidential employees and supervisors paying insurance premiums for the first time.
