Local man pleads guilty in U.S. Circuit Court

39-year-old Zachary Stanley Rice, a Josephine County resident, has pled guilty in U.S. District Court to theft of government property and making a false statement for a passport application.

The IRS determined that Rice, aka Brian Scott Rice, had stolen over $284,000 by filing a fictitious money order that was allegedly drawn on an account at the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland resulting in the hefty tax return.

Rice had also recently changed his name from Brian to Zachary and he had attempted to obtain passports in both of these identities.

Judge Ann Aiken is sentencing Rice on Nov. 28 and he faces up to 10 years prison and a $250,000 fine per count.
