Commissioners change ordinance to reduce fees for home business startups

The Josephine County Board of Commissioners approved a change to an ordinance that will reduce the fees for most people who want to establish a home business in their residence.

Originally, everyone who wanted to start a business in their home had to pay a fee that amounted to $2,000. The change has developed a tiered system of charges that will depend on the amount of traffic the new home business will generate and what renovations must be done to the property. “Basically it alleviates the one-size-fits-all ordinance we have on the books right now,” Commission Chair Simon Hare said.

Now, someone who starts a small business that does not impact the neighbors or utilizes signage, such as a babysitting business, could pay as low as $175 in startup fees to the county.

The adoption of the amendment to the County Rural Land Development Code passed unanimously.
