GPHS seeks mentors in the community

Grants Pass High School is seeking community members to volunteer for the ASPIRE Program, a program designed to give students career advice.

GPHS Career Development Coordinator John Young addressed the District Seven board during their Tuesday meeting and he communicated the positive and effective results that can come from the ASPIRE program, “I quite truthfully am telling the seniors that ASPIRE is an adult volunteer, working for you, that is going to nag and hand hold you through this process. When I ask seniors do you need the nagging, almost universally they say yes,” Young said.

Young says this approach to career development gives the student ownership of their actions and that’s empowering.

Young spent 12 years working for the Canby School District and hopes to bring his success with the program here to District Seven.

Mentors spend one hour a week with a student, in a time that fits both the student and mentor’s schedule, and they discuss career goals, financial aid, trade schools and anything else that may be pertinent to the student’s success.

For more information on becoming a mentor or for a student wanting to apply for a mentor visit the GPHS website.
