RVACT reviews new STIP process

The Rogue Valley Area Commission on Transportation reviewed the new 2015-2018 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program during their meeting today in Grants Pass.

Over a three year period the state is receiving $1.3 billion in federal funds and Region Three, which encompasses Josephine, Jackson, Douglas, Coos and Curry counties, will receive $27 million or approximately 15 percent of the state total.

Under the new process, RVACT’s goal is to preserve existing projects with the majority of funding and to allocate 24 percent of the funding to transportation enhancement projects. Enhancement projects are taking a new scope than in the past and RVACT is charged with improving the roadways for not only local drivers but to allocate funds in a way that will improve regional transportation.

STIP funding can be used for a variety of projects including: public transportation, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, modernization, scenic byways, transportation demand management and protective right-of-way purchases, which are just some of the options.

RVACT must submit an application for STIP by Nov. 27.
