ODF offers reward for arrest of person who caused Slate Creek Fire

The Oregon Department of Forestry is offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest of the person or persons who started the Slate Creek Fire.

The fire, which began around 1:30 p.m. on Labor Day, was started in the vicinity of Root Springs Access Road ten miles southwest of Grants Pass and west of Highway 199 near the community of Wonder.

Investigators located several stolen vehicles at the fire’s origin that were apparently chopped for parts. ODF PIO Brian Ballou says although this is a likely culprit, investigators do not want to rule out other things that may have caused the fire.

The fire burned 160 acres total and cost over $1 million to extinguish. No one was injured and no structures were lost from the incident.

Ballou says a cap on the reward money has not been established.

Anyone who saw a person or vehicle in the Root Springs Access Road area on Labor Day is encouraged to call 1-800-452-7888.
