Southern Oregon University Received $6.7 Million for Campus and Education Upgrades
News Image
Southern Oregon University will receive a big portion of the funding awarded by the Legislature for statewide government entity capital projects in 2024. SOU will get $6 million for ongoing upgrades to its on-campus Central Hall and nearly $667,000 to build a master's degree program in mental health counseling. In a press release, SOU President Rick Bailey said that lawmakers' funding decisions are "pivotal" not only for the university, but for the "entire Southern Oregon region." He said the funding is proof that SOU is reaping the benefits of working closely with local delegates of the Oregon Legislature. In addition to the $666,667 granted by the Legislature during its recent short session, the university secured an additional $1.8 million last month from the Oregon Health Authority to expand its master's degree program. SOU will use the grant to increase the program capacity from 40 to 60 students. There is a critical shortage of mental health caregivers throughout Oregon and SOU is confident that by expanding its program the university will help to solve the problem. SOU's Central Hall upgrade is the only one of seven public Oregon universities to receive funding for a capital project.

IRS Reminds Millions of Last-Minute Tax Filers of Free Tools & Resources Before Deadline
News Image
With the April 15th tax deadline arriving Monday, the Internal Revenue Service is reminding millions of last-minute tax filers that the agency has a variety of free tools and resources available on "IRS.gov." From tax preparation, answers to tax law questions, refund tracking, to business topics and more, "IRS.gov" has everything needed for taxpayers to file on time or get an easy, automatic six-month extension to file. For taxpayers who needed an extension of time to file their taxes, there are several options to get an automatic extension through October 15th. Although an extension grants extra time to file, it does not extend the obligation to pay taxes due on April 15th. To avoid penalties and late fees, taxpayers who owe should pay either their full tax bill or at least what they can afford to pay by the Monday deadline. The IRS estimates 19 million taxpayers will file for an automatic extension. The agency has already received more than 100 million tax returns, with tens of millions more expected to be filed by 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
