Josephine County Sheriff's deputies arrested a suspect on an out-of-county warrant Tuesday morning.

At 6:41 a.m., deputies identified a blue Chevy Blazer and a black Chevy truck with no license plates in an undisclosed location. The driver of the Blazer was seen the day prior, and it was believed the suspect was camping in the area.

Deputies contacted the suspect, Christopher Myers, and told him overnight camping wasn't permitted. Myers admitted to staying overnight, and that one of the vehicles was having trouble starting. A woman he was with was given the keys so she could move it.

Board Disagreed on Appointing Process during Workshop
News Image
During today's County Administration Workshop, the board disagreed on the Vacant Position Appointing process. Before adjourning the meeting, Commissioner Chris Barnett said, because of a quorum, both Commissioners had the right to appoint to the position. Commissioner Ron Smith said Legal Counsel has already advised that the two of them aren't a part of the process anymore. Barnett disagreed. Appointment meetings for the vacancy are scheduled for 10 a.m. on January 14th and 15th. During other matters, Barnett asked if Smith would be interested in discussing the 32 applicants for the vacant board seat, but Smith declined. When Barnett asked if Smith has secured an attorney, Smith said, "No comment." At the beginning of the meeting, the board moved to approve the renewal of a Grant Agreement for the Boys and Girls Club with dollars passed through their prevention department. The grant will help support Smart Moves, a curriculum program designed to teach local kids valuable skills and to avoid risky behaviors via targeted programs and interactive learning.

GP Woman Filed Wrongful Imprisonment Suit against Governor Kotek
Grants Pass resident Terri Lee Brown is seeking justice after a wrongful imprisonment.

According to KDRV, the Oregon Supreme Court ruled she was wrongfully returned to prison, and now she is filing a $10 million lawsuit against Gov. Tina Kotek for damages.

Brown was initially released from prison in December 2020, eight months early, as part of a COVID-19 effort to reduce the prison population. She was serving a five year sentence for mail theft and drug possession.

Her attorney, Benjamin Haile, highlighted that hundreds of others were released under similar circumstances. After her release, Brown was rearrested twice for parole violations. However, by 2023, she had completed her post-release supervision.

Haile also said that by the time she was re-arrested, the sentence she was serving would have already ended. A year later, Haile said Gov. Kotek revoked multiple releases made by previous governors, leading to Brown's rearrest.

During the three years after her initial release, Brown had rebuilt her life, starting new jobs, regaining custody of her children, and attending school. Haile criticized the governor's actions, stating Brown was given no hearing, no court dates and no new charges.

After spending 80 days in prison, Brown was released and is now seeking compensation for the trauma and financial losses she endured.

Brown and Haile also listed District Attorney Kevin Barton; the Executive Director of the Board of Parole, Dylan Arthur; and officials at the Grants Pass Police Department; as well as other defendants in the suit.
