Investigation points to Sam’s Valley Man Drowning after apparent Boat Fire

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says that an autopsy has confirmed that a Sam’s Valley man whose body was found floating in Lost Creek Lake had drowned and an investigation found evidence of a fire on his boat.

69-year-old Charles Steven Schnell had been camping on his boat at the reservoir in northern Jackson County and was reported missing Wednesday. Schnell’s body was found later that day at the north end of the lake, but the boat was missing.

With the help of sonar, Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue personnel along with divers from Klamath County located the 22-foot boat Friday under about three feet of moving water near the shore a half-mile downstream. An Oregon State Marine Board accident reconstruction team employing deputies from Jackson, Lane and Multnomah Counties determined there had been a fire on board.
