News Image
After a third wave of winter weather over the weekend, Pacific Power crews continue to respond to multiple scattered outages across its Southern Oregon and Northern California service areas. Roughly 500 customers were still affected by power outages in Southern Oregon last night and 60 customers were still affected in California. Working in challenging winter conditions, field crews have made steady progress in their restoration efforts and most customers were expected to have electricity restored by the end of the day. Due to access issues in some areas, some customers may experience extended outages and they should be prepared for the possibility of being without power overnight. Pacific Power encourages customers to always be prepared for outages and the utility supports emergency management agencies that recommend Oregonians have an emergency plan for up to 72 hours without essential services. For restoration estimates, visit "pacificpower.net/outages." If you spot a downed power line, call 9-1-1 and then report the outage to Pacific Power at 1-(877)-508-5088.

DA Upgrades Charges against Man Who Caused Motor Vehicle Crash near RCC
The Josephine County District Attorney's Office has upgraded charges against a man who was seriously hurt in a motor vehicle accident that he caused near Rogue Community College late last year. The Josephine County Sheriff's Office reports deputies arrested 25-year-old Matthew Davis Trevino this week and lodged him at the adult jail facility on felony charges of 3rd-Degree Assault, 4th-Degree Assault and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. On December 1st, 2023, the Sheriff's Office, Rural Metro Fire Department and American Medical Response were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision in the 3500-block of Demaray Drive. An investigation determined that Trevino was driving a Ford Focus with his father as a passenger when he turned right in front of a Toyota Corolla driven by a female motorist. Trevino, his father and the woman identified only as "Cover" had to be extricated from their wrecked vehicles and all were transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Medical Center for treatment of various injuries. Trevino reportedly displayed signs of impairment at the crash scene. He admitted to drinking a beer and taking two shots of hard alcohol before driving. His father said he did not remember the crash and did not wish to pursue charges against his son. He was initially charged with DUII, Reckless Driving and 4th-Degree Assault. The suspect was cited and released to the care of hospital staff. It was unclear why the Sheriff's Office waited nearly three months to arrest him.

National Weather Service Extends and Lowers Elevation of Local Winter Storm Warning
News Image
The National Weather Service has extended the Winter Storm Warning for southwest Oregon through Sunday afternoon and lowered the elevation where snow is likely to fall. The Winter Weather Advisory for the lowest elevations in the region expires at 10 a.m. today. Under the Winter Storm Watch, additional snow accumulations of 4 to 10 inches are expected until 4 p.m. Sunday with up to 40 inches possible over the highest terrain. Winds could gust as high as 40 miles per hour. The Warning includes terrain above 1,500 feet including Interstate 5 passes north of Grants Pass along with US Highway 199 from Hayes Hill to the California border including Selma, Cave Junction and O'Brien. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. High winds could knock down trees and debris onto roadways. Travel is strongly discouraged this weekend because of dangerous conditions. If you must travel, keep tires chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged phone with you. Do not detour during winter storms. A Winter Storm Warning means that severe winter weather is occurring and poses a threat to life and property. The safest place during a winter storm is indoors.
