Governor Visits Oregon Gulch Fire
Gov. John Kitzhaber has toured Oregon's biggest wildfire, where he called on Congress to fund more forest thinning projects to reduce the risk of wildfires.
Kitzhaber told firefighters on the Oregon Gulch fire near Ashland on Wednesday that there is no reason to confront the same high risk of wildfire year after year, when thinning projects that reduce wildfire danger and make forests healthier can provide jobs.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack this week said the U.S. Forest Service will have soon have to start pulling funding from thinning projects and other programs to pay for the continued battle against wildfires.
