Emergency Crews Dispatched to Burn Pile Fire that Spread to Surroundings

A Grass Fire occurred Tuesday in the 17,000 block of Redwood Highway, near Hidden Creek Road in Selma, prompting an emergency response around 2:43 p.m.

The Illinois Valley Fire District, Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District, and the U.S. Forest Service Six Rivers National Forest were promptly dispatched to the incident.

The fire was successfully contained at 1/100th of an acre. Nearby neighbors also helped prior to fire agencies arrival.

An investigation determined that hot ashes from several days prior were placed onto a previously used burn pile still containing combustible material. The residual heat from the ashes rekindled the burn pile, causing it to reignite and spread fire to the surrounding area.
