Detection Feature on Cellular Device Alerted Rescuers to Sunny Valley Wreck

The crash detection feature on a cellular device alerted the Grants Pass 9-1-1 Communications Center to an accident in the Sunny Valley area last night.

On Thursday around 9 p.m., Rural Metro Fire Department, American Medical Response and the Josephine County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash about one mile up Flume Gulch Road.

Additional information was obtained via a text message from the driver that they had rolled off the road and were unable to get out of the vehicle. Poor cell coverage in the remote location prevented the driver from making a voice call.

Firefighters set up a rope system to facilitate extraction of the driver about 50 feet up to the roadway. Only minor injuries were reported.
