Welfare Check at GP Walmart Resulted in Arrest of Sex Offender on Warrants

A welfare check at the Grants Pass Walmart yesterday resulted in the arrest of an out-of-compliance sex offender on two local warrants.

Grants Pass Police responded to the incident at the store on NE Terry Lane on Wednesday at 3:24 p.m..

A Walmart manager called 9-1-1 to report a male subject slumped over in the parking lot on one of the store's motorized carts. They requested a law enforcement and medical response. The man was identified as 62-year-old Jerry Don Cooper.

According to the report, Cooper had recently been discharged from the hospital after medical treatment and he had passed out. It was discovered that he was wanted on two Josephine County warrants for failing to appear in court for two counts of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and one count of Simple Assault.

Cooper was conscious and alert as he was being loaded into an ambulance for the trip to Three Rivers Medical Center. He was cited to appear on the warrants and released to the care of hospital staff.
