Emergency Crews Viewed Rare Spectacle after Responding to Small Vehicle Fire
Emergency first responders were treated to a rare spectacle when they responded to a weekend vehicle fire on Redwood Highway at Hayes Hill.
The Illinois Valley Fire District, Rural Metro Fire Department and Oregon State Police responded to a small vehicle fire near milepost 16 of US Highway 199 on Friday at about 10:40 p.m..
IVFD officials said the occupants noticed smoke coming from the engine, pulled over and discovered the fire. A passing tow truck driver stopped and extinguished the flames prior to the arrival of first responders. No one was hurt and the vehicle was towed away.
Rural Metro officials said the vehicle fire gave firefighters and state troopers a rare glimpse of the Aurora Borealis, which was made possible by a strong geomagnetic storm due to solar flares from the sun.
