Citizens Invited to Help Oregon Emergency Management Department Improve Response

News Image
When emergencies such as storms, fires and floods threaten Oregon communities, it's imperative to have a plan -- one that protects the most vulnerable and uses resources wisely. The people of Oregon know best what they need when emergencies happen and that's why the state's Department of Emergency Management (OEM) wants to hear from them. OEM seeks input from communities and individuals across the state with an interest in helping shape the future of emergency management in Oregon. The agency is looking for feedback on the draft framework for its 2023-2025 strategic plan -- a blueprint for how the agency plans to deliver customer service to communities and partners across the state prior to, during and after an emergency. To participate, take a brief survey by April 30th to share your view of OEM's mission, vision and values, and/or attend a virtual community town hall meeting where you can share your thoughts and discuss key strategies for how OEM can better serve the whole community. No emergency management expertise or prior experience is necessary, and all are welcome to take part. The OEM Town Hall is set for this Wednesday, March 27th, at 1:30 p.m.. For more information, e-mail "publicinfo@oem.oregon.gov." ...Read more

RR Among Six Oregon Communities Receiving OCT Grants to Boost Arbor Day Events

Oregon Community Trees (OCT) is helping boost Arbor Month celebrations in six Oregon communities this year, thanks to grants the nonprofit organization is giving out this spring. Holding a public celebration of Arbor Day is a condition for maintaining Tree City USA status from the National Arbor Day Foundation. OCT Board member Morgan Holen coordinates the grant-giving and she said the Tree City USA communities receiving grants this year are Rogue River, Coburg, Dallas, Lake Oswego, Pendleton and Redmond. The grants range from $350 to $720. The City of Rogue River will use its grant to buy a Japanese snowbell tree, shovels, rakes, a reusable canopy and children's art contest supplies plus take-home gifts for a tree-planting ceremony at the city arboretum in Palmerton Park. Oregon Community Trees is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to promote healthy urban and community forests through leadership, education, awareness and advocacy. ...Read more

News Image
With 290 Firewise USA sites in good standing, the Oregon Department of Forestry is proud that the state is ranked #2 in the nation for number of Firewise USA sites. In 2023, Oregon added 39 new sites creating more fire-adapted communities. Along with being #2 as a state last year, Oregon is also home to the #4 and #5 counties with the most sites in the nation: Jackson County with 75 sites and Deschutes County with 73. Firewise USA is a program that helps guide communities in the process of protecting their homes and neighborhoods from wildfire. The program is run by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and co-sponsored by the National Association of State Foresters and US Forest Service. The Oregon Department of Forestry is responsible for administering the program in Oregon and is a resource to help communities create a wildfire protection plan, find grants to fund projects and give expert advice. This work is not done alone. Through the help of ODF's partners -- like the Oregon State Fire Marshal, community coordinators and local fire departments -- they all work together to complete assessments and help the community develop action plans for implementing wildfire risk reduction activities. ...Read more
