Tuesday afternoon at 5:21 a Firebird was racing a Mustang on North Riverside in Medford when it overtook and crashed into the back of a Green Volkswagen Jetta injuring a man and woman in the Jetta.
According to witnesses Richard Smith, 31, of Medford was racing his ‘97’ black Firebird against a Mustang at speeds, estimated by witnesses as 90 miles per hour north. Smith lost control of the Firebird and it began spinning eventually striking the V.W. from behind. The collision caused both cars to go out of control, striking a third vehicle which was parked in the Kids Unlimited parking lot.
Smith, who was driving on a suspended license, was lodged on charges of assault in the 3rd degree, reckless endangering and reckless driving. His bail is $61,000.
The injured couple was transported to Providence Hospital and treated for multiple injuries, none of which were considered life threatening.
