Gasquet Man Arrested Today’s Bank Robbery + Two Others
Grants Pass Police, with assistance from the Oregon State Police Major Crimes Team arrested Mark Alan Cardinal, 58, of Gasquet, California for today’s bank robbery of the Chase Bank in the Grants Pass Fred Meyer just before noon and added charges from two previous local bank robberies.
At 11:38 Monday morning Cardinal allegedly entered the Chase Bank in Fred Meyer’s and displayed a handgun in his waistband and passed a note demanding money, then left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
A description given out displayed a marked similarity of two previous bank robberies, another Chase Bank on March 13th, and a U.S. Bank branch on Allen Dale on April 18th where the suspect escaped in a mid-sized 4-dooor sedan.
A Grants Pass Detective, assisting the Oregon State Police Major Crimes Unit in an unrelated investigation in Kerby, recognized the suspect closely resembled the description of the bank robber going south bound on the highway and a high risk traffic stop was executed that resulted in Cardinal being retained and transferred to the Grants Pass Police station where he was interrogated by the FBI and a Grants Pass detective.
He was charged for the three bank robberies and is suspected of being responsible for other robberies in the region. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information should contact the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.
