Air Quality Moderate to Unhealthy
Yesterday had some of the worst air quality observed so far in southwest Oregon, except for the Illinois Valley, including Cave Junction. Late afternoon winds finally dispersed some of the smoke in Grants Pass and Medford for a few hours but air quality is deteriorating again today.
Daily average concentrations of fine particulate matter along with the associated air quality is expected to remain between moderate to unhealthy levels around the Medford, Grants Pass and Cave Junction areas today.
Smoke concentrations within the Illinois and Rogue River Valleys west of Crater Lake will see greater smoke impacts throughout most of today. Ventilation winds late this afternoon/early evening will help relieve these smoke impacted areas. However, as night time temperatures cool, smoke is expected to settle back into valley areas particularly those close to the fires.
This pattern of smoke dissipation in late afternoon/evening and smoke settling at night time and morning will continue as fires remain active. The degree of smoke impacts in each locality will be dependent on local fire activity, topography and winds.
