ODF Over Flights Locate Smokes South of Jacksonville
Thunder storms dropped five strikes in the Josephine-Jackson County area protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry. ODF Information Officer Brian Ballou says the smokes reported six miles south of Jacksonville have been located and are all small, less than a 10th of an acre.
The most recent lightning strike map shows a strike northeast of Grants Pass and six more in the Crater Lake area. No word on any smoke being produced in those areas.
Most of the strikes so far have been in Northern California along the Oregon border. One ODF engine has been sent to California to fight a fire east of Hilt in the Hutton Creek area.
A red flag warning issued by the National Weather service continues in effect until 6 p.m. today and the potential for extreme fire activity is present.
Lightning strikes on very dry fuels have the potential to produce multiple new fire starts that could spread quickly to dry fuel conditions.
