Medford Council Considers Adding Force of Law behind Smoking Ban in Parks
The Medford City Council is considering a local law that would allow police officers to cite individuals smoking in the cityís parks.
The councilís directive follows a Parks and Recreation regulation that took effect earlier this month to ban smoking and tobacco products in local parks. Enacting an ordinance would give police the option of citing violators in the parks or on adjacent sidewalks to include the Bear Creek Greenway.
Councilors singled out U.S. Cellular Park, wondering if a ban there would be enforceable and if such a law would have an adverse effect on attracting national softball tournaments to the park. A separate smoking area might be created there.
