Little Butte Creek Fouled by Sewage Spill
A Rogue Valley Sewer Services pump station failed Monday, spilling about 20,000 gallons of raw sewage into the Little Butte Creek at 101 Old Highway 62 in Eagle Point. The sewage flowed for about an hour creating a potential public health risk there.
Crews have cleaned up the debris and disinfected the spill area. Signs warning against contact with the creek water were placed at Harnish Wayside Park along Highway 62.
Water samples were collected at TouVelle State Park, immediately downstream from the Creek’s confluence with the Rogue. They will be tested for E.coli and once the tests come back clean the signs will be removed. The storm water program coordinator felt most of the contamination has dissipated already.
Technicians believe cold temperatures caused the pump to fail.
