Dog Shooter Jailed for 15 Days
Terry Donald Nixon, 60, of Medford pled guilty to first degree animal abuse, unlawful use of a weapon, and reckless endangerment Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court and was sentenced to 15 days in jail.
Nixon shot and killed his Chihuahua/Jack Russell terrier mix after the dog defecated on the carpet, then dumped the body in trash.
Police responded to a 911 call in the 400 block of Ross Lane and were denied entry by Nixon. They obtained a search warrant and during a search of the house recovered a 9 millimeter handgun, believed to the weapon in question.
Nixon will also spend two year on probation and will not be allowed to own animals for five years. Nixon expressed regret at the incident and has no significant criminal history.
According to the Medford Police, pet owners cannot shoot their animals unless they pose a threat.
