Man Jailed for Firing Shots & Police Log Entries
Grants Pass Police responded to a report of shots fired at 6:41 Tuesday evening at 1509 southwest ďIĒ street and arrested Richard Benson, 67, on outstanding warrants and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to the public safety log Bensonís wife called dispatch to say Richard had shot into the ceiling and she was in a bedroom afraid to come out. The dispatcher heard a second shot. Officers in the front and rear of the house were able to see inside and observed Benson in a chair not moving and could see both of his hands which were empty

At that point they advised the woman to exit through the front door where they were waiting and they took Richard into custody.

He was lodged on a parole violation for DUII and the weapons charge.

Other incidents from the public safety log include Donald Ray Boyles, 56, lodged on a trespass III charge from 1695 northeast 7th.

Ronnie Butler was lodged for theft III and trespassed from the South Safeway. He was observed loading his jacket with DVDís.

An attempted burglary was reported at 1201 northeast seventh. The perpetrators smashed the door lock trying to gain entry.

Neal F. Hallifax, 34, was cited and released for trespass II at the 7th Street Safeway after pulling a cart behind his wheelchair and throwing merchandise into his backpack and then hiding in the bathroom.

A multi-colored purse was stolen along with a package delivered by U.S.P.S. and a $500 check.

Police were called to investigate a phone scam where the victim was contacted by phone by someone claiming to be with Pacific Power threatening to shut off power unless a payment was made. Pacific Power confirmed the victim owed them nothing.
