State officials are wrestling with both long term and short term solutions to halt and reverse the Rogue Rivers eroding the banks at Tou Velle State Park.

Improvements added in December, including wooden and gravel stairs to summer wadding areas plus the replacement of blackberry bushes with willow cuttings to stabilize the soil, were washed away two days after they were installed.

The high water cut deeply into the right bank up to a popular trail from the upper park toward the Denman Wildlife Area. The trail, which had recently hosted a high school cross country meet is now has portions considered unsafe.

The goal is to stave off the Rogue’s further encroachment while continuing a natural appearance.
