Tsunami Warning for Oregon's Coast
Tsunami advisory has been issued for the Oregon Coast.
A very strong earthquake near the coast of Chile this morning generated a tsunami that is now moving across the Pacific Ocean. The initial waves from the tsunami will arrive at the southern Oregon coast south of Cape Blanco at 1:50 p.m. today, and in the Charleston area near North Bend and Coos Bay at 2:02 p.m. The highest tsunami driven wave heights will be around one foot and will occur 1 to 2 hours after the arrival of the initial wave. The tsunami generated wave heights will be in addition to any other fluctuations in sea level caused by wind waves, swells, or tidal influences.
While these waves will not be high enough to cause widespread damage, they still may cause minor damage in harbor areas. They will also endanger people on or near exposed areas of the coast such as jetties and headlands.
