Deadly Stabbing Trial Began Tuesday
The trial of Jose Valencia-Gaona, 45, accused stabbing 38-year-old Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez to death September 1st of last year began Tuesday in Jackson County Circuit Court.
Ursula Brackett of Medford testified she arrived at her apartment in the 1900 block of Table Rock Road and spoke with Rodriguez at 8:00 p.m., around 30 minutes before the attack. Rodriguez told her that if she saw someone that didnít look like they should be there to call 911.
Minutes later she heard Rodriguez talking loudly in Spanish and then call Brackettís name. She came around a corner and saw a man restraining and assaulting the victim. Brackettís boyfriend, Roderick Hawkins, heard the cries for help and saw the man assaulting Rodriguez, who then came at him with a knife, causing Hawkins to flee. By the time the attacker fled Rodriquez had been stabbed multiple times and died at the scene.
A knife allegedly discarded by the fleeing attacker was found near the scene. DNA on the blade matched Rodriquez and DNA found on the handle matched Valencia.
The trial continues this week.
