I.V. Airport hosts Firefighter Faire
The Illinois Valley Airport is hosting a Firefighter Faire from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
The day starts with a volunteer firefighter breakfast at 8:00 a.m.
The Moon Tree 10k Run is held at 10:00 a.m. Those interested in participating in the run must first register online at healthyu.com.
Other events include activities, displays, tours of the historic smokejumper base as well as demonstrations by the Rogue Valley Flyers RC Club. Camping is also permitted and free showers are available.
The event is to commemorate the 1971 flight of astronaut Stuart Roosa on the Apollo 14 mission to the moon and back. Roosa worked at the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base before becoming an astronaut and during his trip to the moon he brought 500 fir tree seeds with him. When he returned, these seeds were planted across the country, including one at the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base Museum, and they became known as Moon Trees.
