Walden Due in Central Point for Press Conference on Farm Bill
Congressman Greg Walden, Jackson County Commissioner Doug Breidenthal, Oregon Farm Bureau President Barry Bushue, and Jackson County Farm Bureau President Ron Bjork will hold a press conference in Central Point Friday to discuss House passage of a five year farm bill and what it means for southern Oregon.
The press conference will take place at 11:00 am at the Heffner Cattle Company, 996 Wilson Road, Central Point.
The farm bill provides the safety net and certainty that Oregonís farmers and ranchers need, while reforming farm and nutrition programs to reduce government spending by $16 billion. It reduces fraud in the food stamp program and increases assistance for local food banks.
The farm bill also contains a year of funding for the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program that funds essential county services like schools, roads, and law enforcement.
Regulatory relief for farmers and foresters is also included, including language requiring the FDA to assess the economic impacts of their proposed food safety rules on fruit and vegetable growers, and a provision preventing the EPA from regulating run-off from forest roads as if it were raw sewage being pumped into a river. It permanently reauthorizes and provides retroactive disaster funding for livestock producers, like those who lost grazing land and livestock to fires across eastern and southern Oregon.
