Take A Walk Through the Park on New Year’s Day
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the public to start the new year by participating in one of 30 guided hikes to take place in state parks on New Year’s Day.
This is the third year the Department has participated in first Day Hikes, a nationwide initiative to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate the New Year by getting out for a walk in a state park. Last year 420 Oregonians took a guided hike.
There are two opportunities in Southern Oregon. Tou Velle State Recreation Site will start a hike at 11 a.m., cover about a mile and take around an hour. It will start at Picnic Area A.
Valley of the Rogue State Park will also host a hike slated to begin at 10 a.m. and last about two hours. It will begin in the program area. The $5 parking fee will be waived on the first.
Participants should dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water as well as a camera or binoculars for viewing wildlife.
