California Man Arrested Twice for Theft
Richard Rocky Mendez, 25, from California was arrested twice over the weekend and his girlfriend, Brandy Shoshone Mendoza, 31, was arrested once.

Fire fighters focus on north side of Oak Flat Fire
Fire fighting efforts on the now two-week-old Oak Flat Fire near Selma are focused on the breakout on the north side of the fire in the Dutchy Creek area.

Helicopters dropped 175 buckets of water on the fire, as that, and 14 loads of fire retardant, gave ground crows more time to dig fire lines.

Six teens arrested during attempted burglary at Crater High
Six teenagers, some of whom appeared to have gang connections, were taken into custody after midnight yesterday at Crater High School, where they had broken in and were stealing computer equipment, police officers said.

Foster children receive backpacks, school supplies
About 200 local children in foster care received a nice jump on the upcoming school year when each one received a backpack full of essential school items, courtesy of Our Foster Kids, Inc., this afternoon.

NICU at RVMC receives $5,000 for educational support
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rogue Valley Medical Center is getting a boost today when Pepsi of Medford grants $5,000 to the hospital’s “NICU” instructors this afternoon.

The stipend is meant to help nurse educators develop new learning materials for classes through the Natal Intensive Care Unit.

Oak Flat Fire Now 60% Contained
The Oak Flat fire is now 60 percent contained although the lower containment number doesn’t indicate the firefighters are losing ground. It is a more precise measurement done with aerial infrared equipment.

The fire has now consumed 5,708 and is manned by 959 firefighters this morning according to spokesperson Tim Johnson.

ODFW Offers Pheasant Hunting Workshop
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is sponsoring a pheasant hunting workshop September 11th and 12th in the Denman Wildlife Area outside of Medford.

The two day workshop for men and women includes a half day shotgun skills training Saturday morning and two separate pheasant hunts.

Sewer Work Begins Monday on 5th Street
Construction crews will begin work Monday on the 5th Street sewer project. The project will run from “F” Street to “C” Street.

Drivers should expect intermittent delays as traffic may be down to one lane.

Dam Removal Triggers Mosquito Swarms
Enormous swarms of flood-water mosquitoes have hatched in the muddy sloughs drained from behind where Gold Ray Dam was.

The theory is the mass disturbance of water during the draining of the sloughs that began August 10th, pushed water over eggs laid long ago by flood water mosquitoes and they hatched by the millions.

1,000 Firefighters Work to Contain Oak Flat Fire
The 760 firefighters plus 12 additional 20 man hand crews are working to contain the Oak Flat Fire that has burned over 5,360 acres about 20 miles southwest of Grants Pass.

The additional personnel were called in after the fire jumped the northern containment lines late Wednesday afternoon.
