Rural Metro Crews Involved in Two Sunday Afternoon Rescues in Josephine County
News Image
Rural Metro Fire Department was involved in two rescues on Sunday afternoon in the "unprotected area" of Josephine County. Fortunately, neither incident resulted in serious outcomes. Shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center received a text message from someone reporting a dirt bike crash in a remote location up Taylor Creek Road. The text indicated a rider had slid off the Taylor Creek Trail and the biker's legs were pinned under the motorcycle. Rural Metro crews and medics from American Medical Response hiked in a half-mile to extract the rider and a friend out to the trailhead. Along the way, rescuers encountered a rattlesnake that had to be euthanized in order to safely reach the patient. After a medical evaluation, the rider denied any injuries that would have required transport to the hospital. On Sunday at 3:40 p.m., residents living along the Rogue River observed an overturned orange Tahiti raft, oar and backpack floating downstream in the 2600-block of Rogue River Highway. Calls to 9-1-1 mobilized multiple units from Rural Metro, Grants Pass Fire & Rescue and AMR that rushed to both sides of the river in search of a possible person in distress. Even though a call of a human in distress was never received, the need to follow through with searching all surrounding areas was imperative. Bank-based searchers -- along with a rescue boat launched from the Parkway Station at Baker Park -- were unable to locate anyone and the search was called off.

FEMA & FCC Running Nationwide Emergency Alert Test on Wednesday Morning
News Image
An otherwise peaceful Wednesday morning in October will be briefly interrupted by blaring alerts on cell phones, radios and televisions as several federal agencies perform a joint nationwide test. Tomorrow at 11:20 a.m. Pacific Time, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are running a test of the country's Emergency Alert System (EAS) plus the Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEA) that goes out to mobile devices. The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. At that time and for 30 minutes after, cell phones that are switched on and within range of a cell tower will get a message that reads: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed." On radio and television, tomorrow's test is set to last about one minute and will look or sound similar to monthly emergency alert system tests you may have heard before. The message will say: "This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This is only a test. No action is required by the public."

Deputies Jailed Man on Statewide Warrant after Weekend Call at Parents' Home
The Josephine County Sheriff's Office jailed a man on a statewide felony warrant after a weekend disturbance at a home in the New Hope area. The Sheriff's Office reports deputies arrested 35-year-old Lee Charles Conway for the incident at a home in the 200-block of Detrick Drive on Saturday at 11:14 a.m.. His parents did not claim the incident to be physical, but they wanted their son to be trespassed from their residence. After searching the area, deputies located Conway in the 200-block of Penny Lane and discovered that he was wanted on an Oregon State warrant for Parole Violation stemming from a past conviction for Felony 3rd-Degree Assault. GP Police Jailed Felony for Parole Violation & Not Registering as Sex Offender
Grants Pass Police jailed a felon for violating his post-prison supervision after investigating a weekend report of suspicious activity in the southeast part of the city. The Police Department reports officers arrested 37-year-old Antoine C. Roberson in the 1300-block of Parkdale Drive on Saturday at about 12:15 p.m.. Police said a resident of the area called 9-1-1 to report that Roberson drove to that location, got out of his vehicle and began walking around in circles. The caller said the man kept taking his clothing off and putting it back on, and they believed he was under the influence of narcotics. Upon arrival, officers contacted Roberson and he initially gave them a false name. That's most likely because he is a convicted sex offender who had failed to register with local law enforcement since April 2021. Antoine Roberson was lodged at the Josephine County Jail for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and the resulting Felony Parole Violation. He was being held on a no-bail detainer. Jail records show he had already been arrested twice this year for violating terms of his parole.
