Commissioners voted to support Sustainable Valley Initiative
The Commissioners voted to draft a letter of support to the Sustainable Valley Initiative following a presentation by Mark VonHolle (von HALL) this morning. VonHolle said the initiative to promote high tech, clean-energy business has received support from Jackson County, the City of Medford, Asante Health Systems and Lithia Motors.

"August Rush" is tonight's feature at Movies in the Park
“August Rush,” the 2007 film starring Freddie Highmore and Keri Russell, is tonight’s feature in the Movies in the Park Program at Tom Pearce Park.

The movie starts at sunset, but you may arrive and park for free after 7 p.m., when the county’s park user fee is waived for the night.

"Publice Gathering" tonight at Anne Basker
A meeting called “A Public Gathering for the Common Good,” is set for tonight, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Anne Basker Auditorium.

The purpose of the meeting is to bring awareness and discuss issues, such as the proposed one-million-acre Siskiyou Crest National Monument along with other natural resource issues.

All are welcome. Unlike most events at the Anne Basker Auditorium, this meeting will not be televised on Cable Channel 14.

Navickas, Guardsman square off for Ashland council spot
Ashland City Councilman Eric Navickas has decided to seek re-election and face challenger Raymond Hanson, an Oregon Army National Guard member who returned from Iraq last spring.

The race between the two may prove to be the most spirited among Southern Oregon local elections this fall.

Leave it to beaver to change dam demolition
When the Rogue River unexpectedly flowed past Gold Ray Dam earlier this week, work crews discovered it may have been the work of a beaver.

Crews had planned to drain only Tolo Slough upstream of the dam on Wednesday. They had built a temporary dam, called a coffer dam, between Gold Ray Dam and a sand spit.

Southern Oregon Skywatchers are hosting free public star parties tonight and tomorrow nights at Joseph Stewart State Park, overlooking Lost Creek Reservoir.

Commissioners to revisit economic development grant today
The Josephine County Commissioners will revisit a grant and loan they approved for a local mining assay business last week.

The Economic Development grant for Rock’n’ Earth Assay, which the board had approved on August 3, is on the commissioners’ agenda this morning.

OSP believes it knows who slain man at marijuana grow was
Oregon State Police officials believe they’ve identified the man shot and killed by Jackson County sheriff’s deputies while raiding an illegal marijuana grow site on Bureau of Land Management property Wednesday.

OSP Sergeant Jeff Proulx said investigators would be able to confirm the man’s identity by crosschecking fingerprints with those of known criminals in law enforcement databases.
