27-percent turnout yields five new councilors
A special election in which only 27.6 percent of city voters turned in ballots revealed five new members of the Grants Pass City Council tonight.
Winning in tonight's special election were Dan DeYoung, Rick Riker, Lily Morgan, Darin Fowler and Kris Woodburn.
Highway 199 reopened
Highway 199 has now been reopened to two-way traffic after a rock slide at Patrick Creek was removed this morning.
The highway finally reopened after it was sealed off for 25 hours since yesterday morning.
Hicks, Maurer guests on Wednesday Talk Show
Wally Hicks, a candidate to represent the Third District in the Oregon House of Representatives, is Scott Jorgensen’s guest in the first half of the KAJO Wednesday Talk Show tomorrow morning.
The show begins at 9:35 a.m.
In the second half of the show, the man Hicks hopes to replace, Ron Maurer, will be Jorgensen’s guest. Maurer is a candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
U.S. Cellular launches 3G Mobile Broadband in local area
U.S. Cellular launched the its 3G Mobile Broadband for customers in Grants Pass and Medford, allowing them to access data on their cell phones 10 times faster than before and at no additional cost.
U.S. Cellular anticipates its entire network in Oregon to have 3G coverage by the end of the summer.
Redwood Highway
Highway 199, the Redwood Highway, is still closed due to yesterday morning's rock slide at Patrick Creek.
CalTrans maintenance workers are working to clear the road, and it is expected to be cleared for one-way controlled traffic by 2 p.m. today.
CalTrans will issue a report at that time regarding the status.
This is the second rock slide that's closed Redwood Highway at Patrick's Creek, 16 miles south of the Oregon-California border.
Central Point boy in fair condition after lawnmower accident
A 4-year-old Central Point boy is in fair condition at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland after a riding lawn mower accidentally severed part of his right leg Saturday.
It’s not been determined how long Louwashyouwa King will remain in the hospital.
Supreme Court to hear Walmart deliberations in Medford
The Oregon Supreme Court will travel to Medford on May 19 to hear a citizen group’s appeal of a Walmart Supercenter planned for construction in South Medford.
The court will convene at North Medford High School to hear oral arguments in the fight over whether the City of Medford was mistaken in allowing Walmart to go forward with its project.
For more than six years, Walmart has planned to build a 176,500-square-foot store on the site of the old Miles Field location.
Dismissed state employee evaluated after buying weapons
Concerns about a former employee who purchased firearms after he was placed on leave prompted an investigation that included the use of a SWAT team yesterday.
Negotiators and the SWAT team from Medford safely took the man, who had been placed on leave from the Oregon Department of Transportation, into protective custody early yesterday morning.
Snow expected on higher elevations tonight
Just when you might have thought sprung had sprung, meteorologists are predicting snow in the hills around the Rogue Valley and as much as seven inches in higher elevations.
A Winter Storm watch was issued for portions of Josephine, Douglas and Jackson counties, and all roads out of the Rogue Valley should see snow tonight with the snow level dropping to 2,000 feet after 6 p.m. tonight.
